Alan Carson

email: alancarson@coachforparents.net

Seventeen years ago I was embarking on a new role in the field of education when our daughter, Sarah, was born. I was leaving a career as a high school health education teacher and was beginning a second career as a middle school guidance counselor. The intersection of these two events led me to reflect on my life as an educator/leader, and I reached two conclusions.

First, I had a great relationship with some kids, but a lousy relationship with others. I sometimes would find myself in power struggles with certain children when facing certain behaviors or attitudes. That would have to stop. I would have to appreciate all children regardless of their behavior. All of the students that I guided and counseled would have to know that I cared about them through my words and actions.

Next, I knew in my heart that I would love my newborn daughter unconditionally, but I also knew I had to make certain changes to be the very best father I could be. Until her birth I had coached high school basketball, but my pursuit of excellence in coaching would interfere with my role as a parent. We are all given one chance to raise our kids as well as possible and Sarah would need to be the priority in my life.

Leading up to Sarah’s birth and in the first year of her life, I prepared myself to be a parent educator. Not only for myself, but for the families in my school. I became certified to facilitate The Positive Parenting Program offered through the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and read a dozen child development and parenting books by experts such as John Rosemond, Jim Fay, Alfie Kohn, and Jane Bluestein.

Taking into account the wisdom I gained from working with kids and my research, in addition to my desire to be the best dad possible for Sarah, I entered my parent education work with this hypothesis: if parents follow a basic core philosophy that places the parent/child relationship above power struggles, they will have an amazing relationship with their great kids. No excuses.

Futhermore, I wanted to go beyond simple parenting tips and develop parenting theories that worked with strong-willed children, children with ADHD, children with anger management issues and children with a host of other challenges. Every parent/child relationship has the potential to be warm, loving and deeply fulfilling. No one should be left out.

Finally, my theories were more than professional hypotheses. Parent education had become personal: failure with my own daughter was simply not an option. How could I stand before people and tell them what would work and what would not work unless it absolutely led to kids being responsible, self-disciplined, loving, caring, respectful people?

So I made myself a promise: I would facilitate parent education courses only as long as I could hold my own daughter up as a model for what all kids can become.

My hypothesis is now a proof. Sarah is kind, loyal, hard working, responsible, goal-oriented, respectful, appreciative, and wants to make the world a better place. Professionally, I have worked with hundreds of parents in one form or another, and I honestly believe that each one is a better parent as a result.

Simply stated, working with parents to improve the parent/child relationship is my calling. It’s my passion. I am dedicated with all my heart to the parents I work with and the incredible relationship they will soon have with their children. Alan can be reached at parentslead@mac.com.

Kristy Dixon

I received my Bachelors degree in Education and Masters degree in Educational Psychology both from Texas A&M University. I live in Carrollton, Texas with my wonderful husband of 5 years to our 19 month old little girl. I was a teacher for 3 years (1st grade for one year then 2nd grade for 2 years). After that, I became the part-time counselor at the same elementary school. However, because my position is going full time next school year I have chosen to resign and be a stay-at-home mom. I am not ready to stop counseling and helping parents and children so I think being a parent coach is the next, natural progressive step in my life to help me hold onto something I love outside of the home.

As a school counselor, when I had completed my sessions with a child I was to refer them to an outside counselor or psychologist. However, sometimes I felt that that child would not really benefit from counseling until the parents got help with their parenting skills. I would find myself naturally coaching parents when I met with them do discuss their child’s progress. I feel that becoming a Parent Coach will be an effective way to actually help the child as well as the parent.

After helping some of my own friends tweak some of their parenting skills and giving them some new techniques to try and insight into their child’s needs I realized that I was pretty good at coaching parents. They began to call me, tell me the situation, and ask me to coach them through what to do next. Once they began to feel successful and more self-confident in their parenting ability I began to feel more self-confident in my skills as a “parenting coach” and thus feel that I have found my calling.

Many parents have difficulty understanding children of today and the gifts they possess. Through my experience as a parent and child meditation facilitator I found that there was a gap between what I was doing and the children, it was the parents. Through this discovery I realized that the parents needed to gain a better understanding of their children.

I am a certified Parent Coach with the Academy of Coaching Parents International, a certified Reflexologist with the Reflexology Association of Canada since 1999, graduate of the Usui System of Natural Healing as a Reiki Master/Teacher since 2003, Certified Dowser and a student of Hemi Sync Meditation at Aromansse since 2003. I am also the creator and facilitator of a Children's Meditation program employing the use of the Hemi-Sync technology. Through my own meditation practice I have rediscovered many tools that were always a part of me. All of these tools are implemented into my parent coaching practice.

As a parent coach I specialize in children who are considered sensitive. By working with me I will offer you support and guidance to understand your child on a whole new level of awareness. You will gain tools to guide, nurture and support your child and bring harmony and balance to your lives.

I have been married to Michel for 15 years and we have two amazing boys, Andre (10) and Cabrel (7). We own two home-based businesses, Blissful Soles Reflexology and Hammertime (handyman service). My family and I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. You may contact me at mdupas1@mts.net or go to www.aromansse.com

I live in the Niagara Region in Ontario Canada. I have been married for 19 years; I am the proud mother of three children, two of which are my step children, their ages are 18, 23, and 25. I am also a proud aunt to my nieces and nephews who mean so much to me. During my journey in parenting, or as a role model for the children in my life, I feel I have learned many things from them along the way. Once my son was old enough I went back to school, with my studies in Social Services; I worked in the addiction field, women's shelter for battered women and their children, as well as with the homeless initiative; a place that helps the homeless find an affordable place to live. For the past seven years I have been working in a residential treatment center, when I was hired there the age group was, thirteen to eighteen in the past two years this has changed and I now work with children ages 9 to 12. While working in this agency there has been many changes, and I feel I have had the opportunity to grow and learn many things along the way, however this leaves me to questioning the gaps I feel need to be addressed. Before becoming a parent coach, Karen Gardner enjoyed a number of child centered occupations. She has been a member of a specialized Head Start team, studied special and early childhood education, and developed a creative writing program for at risk children. It was when she became a journalist specializing in family issues, however, that her interest in parenting theory and single parent issues took center stage.

As a writer, Karen was exposed to massive amounts of parenting information from countless childrearing experts. She found the experience to be mind boggling, but in the end she discovered one simple truth—Parents are the experts when it comes to their own children. This belief is the premise on which her coaching practice is based. Karen acknowledges the many parenting theories, but sincerely believes there is no universal approach to childrearing. She feels every parent, child, and family has a unique perspective.

This, in turn, makes their difficulties and triumphs as individual as they are. Karen carries this belief into her coaching practice, and uses it to empower parents in their role as experts. In addition to her professional qualifications, Karen is a single parent. Her daughter, Irene, is a high school senior looking forward to studying architecture in the fall. Karen credits Irene for teaching her about life, love, and believing in herself as a parent. Karen can be reached at kygardner@verizon.net.

I have been working with children, parents and families for more than 16 years; first as a preschool teacher, then as a Certified Professional Nanny, and now as an ACPI Certified Coach™ for Parents and Families with the specialty niches in Children with Special Needs and Children with Health Issues.  Throughout the last 16 years, I have continued my education and increased my expertise in child development, psychology, and parenting theories not only through the courses I’ve taken, but also by reading numerous books, magazines, and articles.

I believe strongly in positive parenting; reinforcing positive behavior and eliminating punishment as much as possible.  I understand children do not purposely try to anger people, but try to please their adults as much as possible.  With this as the basic understanding, I teach parents to take a step back, examine the situation, and try to see the issues through their child's eyes.  My goal is to help families create lasting relationships between parents and children based on respect and love, so as the children grow, they feel comfortable and confident about seeking advice from their parents.

As a ACPI Certified Coach™ for Parents and Families, I work with parents to help them meet their parenting goals.  I do this through education, support, and understanding.  I use the knowledge I have obtained over the years to provide informed suggestions to parents.  More importantly, I use my hands on experiences to really understand what parents are feeling and living with daily to help parents create plans that will create solutions.  I am passionate about the parent/child relationship and look forward to serving your parenting needs.

I have been working with children, in one way or another, throughout most of my career. I received my bachelor’s degree in elementary education, but was always distracted by the social and emotional issues of the individual students and was not comfortable managing large groups. After I graduated, I spent some time working as a residential counselor in an adolescent group home and then coordinated a latchkey warmline service and single parent support group. I went on to obtain my master’s degree in Expressive Arts Therapy and held positions as a therapist in an adolescent residential treatment center (where I received some training in family therapy) and elementary school counselor. The field of Expressive Arts Therapies guides us in helping others to express themselves non-verbally, and I was particularly drawn to communicating with children through their natural language of play. I used play therapy in my position as a school counselor and later worked as a Play Therapist in a preschool day treatment program. I also gained experience as a Parent Educator and provided classes through a local agency with an emphasis on respect and communication in the parent-child relationship.  More About Kathi Waters...

ACPI Testimonial
ACPI Parent Coaching certification was invaluable! When I first realized how strong my heart's desire was to help parents learn positive ways to parent; I didn’t know where to turn. I knew that I wanted to help teach/encourage parents who were struggling, but didn't know that a Parent Coach was a viable option until I was led to Dr. Caron Goode. After our first phone conversation; I knew that this was what I wanted to do during the Fall of my life. The course work was easy to grasp and the instructors were extremely knowledgeable and supportive. My many years of practical experience; coupled with this training has given me the confidence I need to become who I am; A Parent Coach. Thank you Caron for providing this career opportunity for me, and thank you to all of the wonderful instructors and my classmates who also provided their own support and practical insight.

Marti Genge

Marti Genge, CCPF has been in the parenting education field for over 20 years. In the 90’s she published a parenting magazine in California. After moving back to Arkansas with her family, she has worked with the state federal grant on parent involvement called Center for Effective Parenting/ARPIC (Arkansas Parent Involvement Center). Marti does the newsletter for all parent educators in the State of Arkansas with that grant. Since 2001, Marti has also sold parenting books to schools all over the state of Arkansas for parent centers. With that niche, Marti opened a parenting bookstore called Pages of Parenting Bookstore. It is located in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The website is www.pagesofparenting.com.

“This has enabled me to reach out to parent educators and parents, making the store a great resource center. My certification as an ACPI, CCPF brings depth and additional parent support to my store. My specialty is also Special Needs. When you have a child with special needs, you become an advocate as a way to get the best for your child. With that knowledge I gained and the many years of experience on the Board of Arkansas Support Network and American Amputee Foundation, I want to guide parents along that crazy path we travel with special needs. I truly believe in not reinventing the wheel.”

Wendy Martin

Region: Virginia, Maryland, DC
Age Groups: birth to teens
Specialties: new moms, single moms, infants and toddlers
email: babytalk.parenting411@gmail.com
website: www.tinkerstoffee.com

Wendy Martin grew up the third of six children in New Jersey and raised her youngest brother when she was seven because her father had left the family and her mother suffered from mental illness. She raised three of her own children as a single mom and now has two grandsons; hopefully, the first of many. Wendy believes the most important goal for parents is to raise their children to be emotionally healthy, independent adults. That is accomplished by providing the children a loving, secure home so they can blossom into the best they can be. I also believe that gender should not be an issue -- son or daughter should be provided with the same opportunities, same expectations. Children have their parents as their primary role models. Treat the children with love, respect and trust, and that will be modeled back.

When I decided to become a parent coach, I felt I wanted to add to my extensive informal experiences with formal training and to expand my knowledge further. I had been a postpartum doula in California and when I Googled "doula," I found the Academy for Coaching Parents International. It is based in Fort Worth, and within two weeks I was in Texas for a conference with 15 like-minded women, from pediatricians to nurses to teachers, who had a passion for helping parents be the best they could be. What the academy taught me was how to connect with the parents, help them focus on their issues, isolate the problem and, most importantly, help them hear my suggestions. I believe that unconditional love is the most important aspect of parenting and can be demonstrated in many different ways. Each child is an individual and has different needs. Recognizing the need and how to keep each child's "love cup" full is a difficult, ongoing, full-time task for parents.
